- This Old World scorpion is from Southern Africa. It occurs just north of the Cape Peninsula northwards into southern Namibia and extending eastwards into the Eastern Cape becoming less common with this eastward distribution. In the Western Cape this scorpion is the common buthid but does not occur on the Cape Peninsula.
- It inhabits hard packed sandy and gritty soil where burrows are found at the base of shrubs, grass tufts and stones.
- The adult size is 70 to 100mm (2.75" - 3.94").
- Their basic coloring is a yellowish-brown color although a black variety also occurs.
- Pectine count = ♂ 35 - 41; ♀ 32 - 38 (PML).
- Males are smaller than females; Males have bulbous pincers whereas females have flat pincers; Males tend to have longer pectines than females.
- Easily confused with the Granulated Thick-tailed Scorpion and the Drab Thick-tailed Scorpion, the venom of this species causes intense pain but has not resulted in any fatalities. Antivenom is not effective for the sting of this species.
