- This New World tarantula is from Mexico and the USA - southern TX (found along the Rio Grande). The species distribution model predicts suitable habitat for this species along the Rio Grande throughout northeastern Mexico in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas.
- In the wild, burrows are typical of that for North American tarantulas (i.e., circular and generally covered by a thin veil of silk).
- So far, in our care, they have not created burrows and seem to be terrestrial.
- The adult size is 4" - 5".
- It is one of the more colorful US tarantulas, with tawny overall leg hair, wide, dark bands on the tibia, and a semi-metallic carapace.
- Aphonopelma moderatum exhibits considerable sexual dimorphism in coloration. Adult females and immature specimens of both sexes possess perhaps the most distinctive color pattern of any species in the United States (i.e., tan to orange body with distinctly darker leg patellae, metatarsi, and tarsi). Adult males, on the other hand, are often solid black or dark brown.
