- Also known as the Red Island Tarantula.
- This New World Terrestrial is from Cuba.
- For a long time P. auratus was sold as P. cubensis. There used to be a golden spider like this sold as 'Citharacanthus spinicrus' that was clearly Phormictopus.
- This species primarily lives in semi-deciduous forests under rocks, in natural crevices of the soil and tree trunks and in caves. They can also be found in very altered areas and a specimen was even collected in a marsh mangrove. It, therefore, seems that this species is ecologically diverse in its habitat requirements.
- Possess urticating hairs and can stridulate. The coloration is quite homogeneous, ranging from the more common golden yellow to a greenish-yellow.
- The adult size is about 8.5".
